Futaleufú Preservation SpA

Who we are

Futaleufú Preservación SpA (FP) is a for-profit Chilean company, operating in Northern Patagonia, with the objectives of protecting environmentally vulnerable habitat while providing economic opportunity to local businesses and citizens.

Home to world-renowned rivers, mountains and outdoor adventure activities, Northern Patagonia is also rich in natural resources which, in the absence of competing economic activity, are vulnerable to environmental exploitation from extractive industries.

We protect land through purchase and/or easement and, where practical, utilize those lands in environmentally sensitive ways to create jobs and economic opportunity for the community. Focused initially on the Futaleufú and Figueroa River Basins, FP has acquired properties along both rivers.

The Futaleufú River is considered the Everest of rivers. Its renowned fame as a premier rafting destination is given to the quality of the glacier-fed white water, big wave trains, and challenging rapids that go through canyons in a pool drop magical order. The turquoise river runs through polished granite boulders, with high mountain peaks nesting many glaciers as background. The lush rain forest and tributaries add to this breathtaking scenery.

Our Approach

We believe sustainable land management must recognize both the environmental needs of the ecosystem and the economic needs of the community. Proper balancing of these needs will ensure enduring preservation, supported both by philanthropists and by the local community. Preservation will only endure, in the presence of community support and involvement.

Our Values

We honor nature and seek to build a collaborative relationship with the community, applying a rigorous and inclusive approach to determining long-term solutions for sustainable land management.

Our Strategy

We endeavor to identify sustainable uses, which address the both the environmental needs and the economic needs of the community.

Our
Development Tools

We protect land through either direct ownership, or application of easements or granting of subsidies for sustainable use.
