Futaleufú Preservación is a for-profit Chilean company, operating in Northern Patagonia, with the objective of promoting sustainable land management and development. By working with the community to develop sustainable approaches to land use and management, we have and will preserve the natural beauty of iconic Patagonian rivers while also meeting the needs of neighboring communities. In so doing, we will contribute to the advancement of Futaleufú as one the world’s very special places to visit for the enjoyment of outdoor adventure in an extraordinary setting.
We believe sustainable land management must recognize both the environmental needs of the ecosystem and the economic needs of the community. Proper balancing of these needs will ensure enduring preservation, supported both by philanthropists and by the local community. Preservation will only endure, in the presence of community support and involvement.
Focused initially on the Futaleufú and Figueroa River Basins, FPS has acquired properties along both rivers, which were vulnerable to commercial exploitation, and has managed its properties to preserve their environmental ecosystems and viewsheds. While passively holding property as open space, in certain circumstances, is the most effective means of preservation, FP also engages in low-impact commercial activities which are designed both to perpetuate FPS, economically, and to meet the surrounding community’s agricultural, employment and recreational needs.
We identify sensitive or threatened land and habitat, based upon perceived impact and/or scientific analyses, which we seek to protect either through ownership, through different kind of agreements, or through provision of financial subsidy for employment of sustainable practices. Simply put, our approach attempts to balance the long-term needs of the ecosystem and of the local community. Based upon resources, needs and opportunities, we hope to improve the region by preserving open space, by preserving viewshed and by promoting sustainable land management.
We honor nature. The land on which we live has evolved over millions of years to exist in its current form and, once damaged, requires both significant time and resources to be restored. Any alteration should only be undertaken after exhaustive analysis of balance and distribution of benefits versus costs.
We honor the community. We strive to understand the day-to-day needs of those who live in the Futaleufu Valley and, endeavor to incorporate such needs into our land management programs, while maintaining an economically sustainable model.
We seek to collaborate with all constituents, who represent varying perspectives. Each has a valuable perspective and our success, if purely partisan, would only be temporary. FPS will partner collaboratively with public sector leaders to address needs and solve problems together. Such partnerships will serve the public interest and will create a competitive advantage in the rapidly growing Chilean outdoor and adventure travel industry.
We apply rigor and inclusion to our analysis, incorporating both science and the perspectives of those not typically represented, in our impact studies.
Our interests are long-term and our actions are intended to benefit both current and future generations.
