Our team

CEO & Founder

John Macfarlane is founder of Arrochar Management LLC, a US-based company specializing in investment management.

John has extensive experience in the not-for-profit sector, having served on the boards of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business, the University of Virginia Investment Management Company, the US Olympic and Paralympic Foundation, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and Waterkeeper Alliance.

John holds an M.B.A. from The University of Virginia’s Darden School and a B.A. in Classical Studies from Hampden-Sydney College, where he was a George F. Baker Scholar.

John and his wife, Dudley, are passionate about outdoor activities. He is an avid mountaineer, having summited five continental peaks (Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Elbrus, Vinson Massif, Aconcagua and Mt Kosciuszko) and Dudley is a competitive equestrian. Together, with their three sons and one daughter-in-law, they have traveled extensively to increase their understanding of and appreciation for the world’s diverse terrains, ecosystems, and cultures. Informed by their travels, they believe strongly in the need to balance human and economic development with sustainable practices to preserve the world’s natural resources.

As Founder of Futaleufú Preservación, the Macfarlane family hopes to shape a new approach to preservation in Patagonia. Their approach will incorporate a responsible corporate philosophy, goals, and vision, with the overarching aim of achieving balance between the needs of man and nature in the management of open space. By applying strong governance, best management practices, leading science, and extensive community engagement, they hope to establish FPS as a leader in the industry of open space conservation.

COO

Robert Currie Ortiz is a Scottish-Chilean adventure guide, explorer, conservationist, and entrepreneur. As an accomplished river guide, he led expeditions in 12 countries on three continents. Robert has worked on some of the world’s most iconic whitewater rivers, including the Biobio and Futaleufú Rivers in southern Chile. In 2010 he helped develop a national policy for containment of the invasive algae didymo upon its discovery in the Futaleufú, meeting with fisheries-related agencies including Sernapesca, Subpesca and the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG).

Robert worked with communities in remote locations promoting awareness of environmental threats and the importance of conservation of river corridors and open space. He holds a deep appreciation for nature and for humanity’s connection with rivers. Robert has been working for the protection and development of the Futaleufú watershed since the early 90s.

As COO, Robert oversees all operations, including personnel, land acquisitions, land protection, and agreements with local advisors and partners. He is based in Santiago, Chile and constantly travels to Patagonia.

FP Community
Involvement

FP has supported and will continue to support the local communities in their efforts to protect and develop the Futaleufú and Figueroa River Basins in accordance with our values and principles. In doing so we hope to increase awareness of local preservation undertakings, connecting them with our global network, and providing support for local conservation projects.
