Strategy

Traditional approaches to land preservation typically embrace passive land management, potentially constraining the neighboring community’s agricultural, economic and recreational opportunities. Left unmet, a community may satisfy those needs through expeditious strategies such as industrial farming, extractive industries or intensive development, all of which produce short-term benefits but endanger both the environment and the revenue opportunities derived from sustainable use such as ecotourism and small-scale farming. In other words, we believe that sustainable land use crowds out unsustainable land use.

We will endeavor to identify sustainable uses, which meet the needs of the community and provide revenues to FP to continue and expand its activities.

Examples of such activities include:
• Practice and encourage sustainable agriculture and grazing,
• Develop and support eco-tourism recreation, and
• Develop eco-tourism hospitality assets, designed and managed in alignment with our values.

While FP’s activities will evolve over time, we will maintain a narrow range of direct operating activities, focusing on land ownership and management. We will partner with best-in-class operators for commercial activities, all of whom will operate in compliance with our approach and values.

Development Tools

• Working with local farmers and ranchers, identify and promote sustainable practices that support the ecosystem. Through our hospitality operations and network, promote market demand for sustainably-produced, local food.

•Conduct field studies on our properties, thus ensuring our usage plans will not unintentionally threaten the river or rare habitat for endemic species in the Region.

•Minimize the development footprint by blending ecotourism venues with the natural surroundings, preserving the unique viewshed and scenic qualities of the Valley.

•Use of different instruments that economically incentivizes farmers and ranchers to protect their land following sustainable practices.
